Gita Gavare Marotis

“At 15, I learned how to fire an automatic weapon, march like a soldier and run with a gas mask on at school in Riga, Latvia. In 1991, I was in Riga’s streets as men built barricades against soviet tanks. I walked in demonstration with thousands other Latvians who craved freedom . . . but freedom had its price. The only world we knew collapsed and we had to find new ways to survive. Before I knew it, I was pulled into human trafficking and ended up spending more than two months in a brothel in Germany. I lived with that secret for almost 20 years. Finally, I decided that my experiences didn’t define me. I took my power back by openly sharing my story. In the process, I was able to help other women stand up and speak their truth, too.”
