Dr. Masachs Boungou is the author of The Power of Personal History: Turning One’s Life Tragedies Into Triumph, in which he shares his moving story of escaping civil war in the Republic of the Congo. Masachs went on to become a Fulbright Scholar at Brandeis University, and recently received his Ph.D. in Global Studies from the University of Massachusetts, Lowell. His dissertation research documents the stories of how immigrants who experienced civil war and genocide have used these experiences to fuel their entrepreneurial drive. This Spring, Masachs delivered the student commencement speech at his UMass Lowell graduation ceremony in which he talked about how, too often, history is viewed as something of the past, but that it actually lives within us—helping to define who we are and what we’re capable of. His book, The Power of Personal History: Turning One’s Life Tragedies Into Triumph, shares how we can overcome crises and challenges, and ultimately thrive.
